I think we should not celebrate Columbus day because he treated the Native Americans poorly. Also he took their land and they said that they discovered it but people were already there. In conclusion, we should not celebrate Columbus day.

I agree with Kei because Christopher Columbus he treated native Americans terribly in the Columbus Day debate magazine/ article some people say he was a hero some say he was a villain I Think that he is a villain because he took the Native Americans land and killed him and slaughter them so I don't think I will really participate in Columbus Day

I think that he should be remembered for discovering The Americas for Europe even though it had already been settled by natives. However, when he discovered it he killed or enslaved most of the people he found who had been there in the first place. Along with him, he brought diseases, Invasive plants (Because sacks of grain often have other seeds in them). but he also brought century's of immigration to come, which is why we're here, after all. Making amends and celebrating indigenous people day isn't a bad Idea and I think we should celebrate it and celebrate columbus day too but look at columbus in a different way and change how we think of him. In summary I think we should celebrate both.

I feel good and bad about Christopher Columbus because even though he disrupted the Native Americans,he still went and to voyage near the America and other voyagers wouldn't be inspired by him and come here and I wouldn't be writing this right now. I say this because in the one of the passages we read about Native Americans,(Who were the first Americans?),it has a fact that states," At the time of Columbus's first voyage there were more than 500 Indian nations," .This makes me think that Columbus disrupted many Indian nations that were not doing anything in particular to him and his crew and many other Europeans. Also In the passage we read about if we

I disagree about the part where you said I wouldn't be here right now, because you could be here right now. Columbus could have inspired everybody without harming the Native Americans. Instead, he killed a whole lot of Native Americans. He also did more bad things to people than good. I feel we should NOT celebrate Columbus day. He is more a villain than a hero.

I think you are quite right. He is the reason we are all here. But he didn't treat the natives well. In summary, I fully agree with you and shall basically paraphrase you (more or less).

I feel that Columbus was pretty brave crossing the Atlantic Ocean when not many others had. Also, when Columbus came, he had pretty advanced technology, more advanced than the Native Americans. So, I don't think I would be writing on a computer right now, if it weren't for Columbus (I really don't like saying that). However, Columbus killed many Native Americans for no exact reason. Columbus brought diseases to their land, took their food, and chopped their hands off for FUN. Columbus used the Native Americans pretty much as slaves.

He did find the Americas by chance and could have collaborated with the natives. He could have formed an alliance and learned their way of life. At the time Native Americans agricultural technology was advanced compared to the Europeans. Who knows what more we could have learned from them if he had chosen to learn from them and live side by side with the Natives.

He treated them worse then slaves. A lot worse. You can't just cut off people's heads because you WANT to! You ESPECIALLY can't enslave a whole group of people just because they don't look the same. You can't just take somebodies land and kill them for it. They are INNOCENT. What did they do to you? Did they kill millions of your people? Did they do anything wrong? No! YOU did everything bad that you possibly could! And you LAUGHED when you chopped their heads off. I wish I could ask hon this- Would YOU like your head to be chopped off? I'm guessing NOT.

He killed them for NO REASON. He took their land for NO REASON. He enslaved them for NO REASON. Why would he do all that terrible stuff? I wish I could ask him this- Would YOU like it if your head was being chopped off? I'm guessing NOT. Would you like it if your friend or relative's head was being chopped off? Probably NOT. He also LAUGHED at it. Who laughs at someone's head being chopped off? Only somebody CRAZY enough to do it. They were innocent! They didn't take HIS land, chop off HIS head, they were just minding their own business! Then some CRAZY guy came and took all their land. Why did he do that? He treated them worse than slaves. WAY worse.

I feel that we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day because he was a murderer. For example when Columbus found the USA,he also found Native Americans. He thought that he found America, and he wanted the glory,so he tried to enslave and kill the Native Americans, and even if he didn't hurt one native,he/she might get sick because when Columbus came, he also brought disease's from Europe. That why we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day,he's a fake. I think he is a fake because he wanted to show he was the first to discover a new land but he really wasn't. One of the text's that I read is that in 1492,there were Native Americans, when Columbus "discovered"the USA.That's why I feel that we shouldn't celebrate Columbus Day.

I think Columbus "found" the land (not found it first!). But he could have found a different way to "do" his "thing". Basically something other than murder and take, I think he could've done something else. I think that Columbus day shouldn't be ignored, but maybe both Indiginous People's Day AND Columbus Day. That way there probably won't be any complaints and bolth will be celebrated so, yeah.

I think Christopher Columbus deserves to be remembered, but not necessarily in all good ways.I mean Columbus did some good things as it in one article. In the Columbus day debate a man named Joseph Scelsa say that Columbus's discovers lead to mass migrations to America because people were searching for better lives in America. But like Wilder and Bayan said Columbus could have "found" America and claimed it for the europeans without the killing off the native americans. I agree that Columbus should be honored, but kids should also learn what Columbus did to the natives. It says n the Columbus day debate that Columbus and his crew started to kill and enslave native americans. But along with that the natives also began to die because of the diseases the europeans brought with them to America. I think a man who did all that doesn't deserve to be honored as a great, great man. Harriet Tubman did tons of great things, but does she have a holiday? NO! So why should Columbus?

I don’t really feel a way about Columbus Day because he did not really find America. But he is very important to America. At first I only thought it was just a day off of school but it’s not. Because no one really celebrates it like a Holiday. To me it’s not but to other people it maybe. I did not know what Columbus Day was until last week because no one celebrated it in my house. But that’s no a bad thing. But he kind of a bad person because he stole the America. By trying to get to Asia to get spices.

i don't think he should be celebrated for something that he didn't find. He stole the native americans' land and slaughtered almost every native american, and those he didn't kill he sent to slavery. As Bayan said he decapitated them for entertainment and brought diseases. I think what we should really be celebrating are the thousands of indigenous indians slaughtered in Columbus' "native american holocaust ".

I think Columbus is a bad person who stumbled into doing something with positive and negative at the same time. The beneficial side is that he caused us to live where we live. We would live in other places if it weren't for Columbus! I suppose someone else would stumble onto America eventually, but that's beside the point.

I agree with Isaiah that Cristopher Columbus was really brave to sail across the ocean to what he thought Asia but, he did really bad things too. Cristopher Columbus enslaved native Americans, killed them, and took credit for finding America. In one of the articles "the Columbus Day debate" it said,"...many people say Columbus was a hero ,others say he was more like a villain".I disagree with the people who said he was a hero because, cutting off the native Americans heads and killing them just because he wants credit for finding America does not sound very heroic to me.In my opinion,I don't think Cristopher Columbus should be celebrated.

I have mixed feeling about Christopher Columbus because like everybody said, he did not discover the Americas and other lands with Native Americans. Also he used European technology to hurt and enslave many Native Americans. I agree with Leo Killsback who is a professor of American Studies at Arizona State University. He said, "Columbus is wrongfully portrayed as a hero. But if we learn about the true history of his legacy we'd find he was not at all heroic." Columbus is important to our history and we should learn about him but maybe not have a federal holiday where everyone gets the day off.
